How Go Gray works

Last updated: October 20, 2026

Go Gray reduces screen time by turning your iPhone screen grayscale. Without color, apps are less rewarding to look at, so you pick up your phone less. Go Gray makes grayscale one tap away and easy to live with.

What grayscale does

Grayscale removes all color from your screen. Apps use bright colors, red notification badges and colorful thumbnails to grab attention. In grayscale, those cues lose most of their pull, and the phone becomes a tool instead of a slot machine. Read the research in Grayscale mode and screen time.

Why it reduces screen time

The founder of gogray.today ran a six-month grayscale experiment starting in 2017 and cut his daily screen time by 54%, from 4h 50m to 2h 14m. The results were covered by Vice, Motherboard, HuffPost and YouthTime.

How Go Gray applies grayscale

  1. Choose Grayscale once. In Settings › Accessibility › Display & Text Size › Color Filters, select Grayscale. Go Gray switches Color Filters on and off for you.
  2. Switch with one tap. Tap the wheel in the app, or use Go Gray Toggle from Control Center (iOS 18 or later), the Action button or Back Tap.
  3. Take color breaks. Need color for a photo or a map? Start a 30-minute color break. Go Gray switches you back to gray by itself.
  4. Get nudges. Pick the apps that pull you in. Go Gray nudges you after 30 minutes and after 1 hour on them.
  5. See your progress. Go Gray logs how long you spend in color each day and how often you go gray.
